Introduction
If you plan to make money on the net, most of the experts will tell you that the best way of doing so is by creating and publishing your own product.
If you are going to publish a digital information product, the most popular way of doing so is by putting your product up for sale using a major network site like ClickBank.com.
In this report, you are about to learn everything you need to about creating and publishing your own ClickBank product.
As you will discover, whilst there is a step-by-step process behind creating, publishing and selling a digital information product through a site like ClickBank, it is not as difficult as you might at first imagine.
Consequently, even if you are still an online marketing beginner, creating and selling your own information product is not beyond you.
You’re just about to discover the ‘how’ and ‘why’ in this report…
The initial idea…
To start with, you need a good product idea.
This may in fact be the most difficult element of the whole product creation process.
The problem is not so much that coming up with a product idea is difficult. It is more to do with the fact that your idea may not be especially original and that even when it is it might not be a money maker.
What you need to do is find a hungry market where there are people willing and able to spend money. Once you have this information, you have the basis of an information product that will make money.
In short, it comes down to picking the right niche in a market where there is money to be made.
This is therefore the first aspect of product creation we will consider.
There has to be money in it…
Net users are willing to pay for information.
They would of course like to receive theirs for free – indeed, it is probably true that in this day and age, they expect information for nothing – but if the information that you provide has enough value, they will pay for it.
This is not however true in every market sector.
Quite naturally, there are some market niches where people are more willing to spend money than others.
If you’re going to sell an information product, the first thing to establish is whether it is realistic to expect to earn money by selling it.
Creating an information product that no-one wants to buy is a waste of time.
Consequently, the ‘buyability’ factor is of crucial importance.
The #1 rule of marketing
Whether you are selling a product on the internet or in the real world of off-line business, there is one golden rule that you must follow if you expect to achieve sales success.
It is always easier to sell into an existing market than it is to create a market yourself. In other words, if people are already spending money on products or services of the kind that you plan to offer, you have a ready-made market. If however no one is spending money in the market, then your job is 100 times harder.
The first thing that you must do is establish whether the market that you are thinking of entering is one where there is money to be made.
There are many ways you can do this.
First, take a look at the existing information products that are selling the best. To do this, click any of the categories on the ClickBank ‘Marketplace’ page to see what products are at the top:
When searching the ClickBank database, it is important to understand that the products at the top of page are not necessarily the best products or the most popular. In reality, a product of being at the top of page indicates that the sales letter for that product is extremely effective.
Nevertheless, it also gives you an indication of the kind of products that people want to buy.
This is therefore extremely valuable information to have:
These for example are the bestselling products in the ‘E-business and E-marketing’ section of the site.
Now, of course you cannot produce an exact replica of the top selling products. Indeed, doing so would be a complete waste of time because these products have already cornered the market.
This does not however detract from the fact that the top products give you an idea of the kind of thing that people are currently spending on.
Another leading digital information product site is PayDotCom.com. This is therefore another place where you can carry out similar research.
However, you need to spread your product idea search a little further than this. If you just focus on the information products that are currently selling well, you risk creating something that has already had its day.
Consequently, you should look at a broader range of sites to get an idea of the kind of thing that net users are really looking for.
For example, eBay is the biggest and most popular online auction site which is just outside the top 20 most popular sites on the net according to Alexa.com. Quite clearly, anything that is popular on eBay (which is after all a site that is selling goods) is something that people are willing to spend their money on.
The way you can find this information is by checking out the eBay Pulse page. On the homepage, you see the most popular search terms used by eBay visitors in the previous 24 hours:
The problem with this shot is that whilst the information provided is helpful, it hardly ever changes. You will have a far better picture of the markets that are really active if you click the drop-down menu at the top of the page (highlighted in the screenshot above) to investigate each individual category in turn.
These for example are the most popular search terms in the ‘Dolls & Bears’ category:
One of the great things about using eBay for this kind of research is that it goes beyond ‘normal’ online marketing parameters. Hence, this kind of research helps to provide product ideas that you might not otherwise have thought of.
As an example, ‘Dolls & Bears’ is probably a market you would not have thought of but it is equally obviously a market where there is plenty of money being spent.
You can break it down even further to look at the sub-categories to get a real idea of what is going on:
Another way of finding where net users are spending their money is from online shopping sites like MySimon.com or Shop.com.
But I think my favorite resource for finding exactly what people are buying on the net is hiding right under your nose, a resource that very few people are even aware exists. This is the shopping area of PayPal:
When you first open the site, you will need to click the ‘View all’ link in the category list on the left hand side of the page. When you do so, it will open out the category list as seen on the left-hand side of this shot.
The great thing with this particular resource is that if you click on any category, it not only shows you the products that are selling the best, but it even tells you exactly how many products they have sold:
In this example, the company at the top of the table has sold in excess of 53,000 packets of slimming tea.
They couldn’t really be a clearer indication that this is an immensely popular product then this. It tells you that PayPal users are very keen on natural slimming products.
This section of PayPal is a goldmine because it is your very clear indication of exactly where people are spending their money.
The next thing to establish is exactly how people are searching for this kind of information.
How are they searching?
Once you have the genesis of a product idea, the next thing to establish is exactly how people search for the kind of information you are thinking of including in your product.
This is important because if you create the product, you will not generate sales (either directly or through ClickBank affiliates) if you cannot establish what search terms people are using to find these products.
However, this is only part of the equation. In addition, you need to establish what the competition is like in the market and whether the search terms people are using indicate commercial intent or not.
The first thing to investigate is what search terms or phrases people use to look for the kind of product you are thinking of producing.
To do this, there are plenty of keyword search tools on the market but few are quicker or easier to use than the Google AdWords keyword research tool. Given that this tool is from Google, you can also be sure that the information provided is extremely accurate as well.
These are the results for ‘slimming tea’:
The most popular search term is ‘slimming tea’ showing 60,500 searches a month. To investigate how competitive the market is if you try to drive visitors to your site using this particular keyword phrase, run a standard Google search:
There are a couple of things to notice on the search results page.
Firstly, in the top right-hand corner, you can see that when I search for ‘slimming tea’ in inverted commas (“.”), there are 209,000 results.
This is a little higher than I would like (anything less than 100,000 competitors is ideal). Even so, anything less than a quarter of a million competitors means that you should be able to get on the first results page in a matter of days or weeks rather than months or years.
Equally as importantly, because I am using the freeSEO Quake plugin for Firefox, I can see the Google Page Rank of every result on the page (in the red boxes). There is no page here that has a Page Rank of more than three.
Again this suggests that keyword targeted marketing should get your site and/or marketing materials on this first page.
So far, we have established that there are in excess of 60,000 people searching for slimming tea information every month and that the competition is beatable.
The final thing is to investigate whether people using ‘slimming tea’ as a search term have any intent of spending money when they do so.
To do this, run the search phrase through the free commercial intent research tool provided by Microsoft.
This tool gives you a probability rating of how likely it is that any search term you are researching indicates that the searcher is ready to spend money:
In this case, we type in ‘slimming tea’, check the ‘Query’ radio button underneath and click the orange ‘Go’ link.
This gives you a percentile rating of how likely this term is to be a commercially motivated search:
In this case, there is an 88% chance that anyone searching for slimming tea is planning to spend money on it. This is a very reasonable rating, something that is proved by running a search for an even more obviously commercial phrase like ‘buy slimming tea’:
This is only slightly more commercial, proving that the original search term is one that you would very definitely target in your marketing efforts.
Researching your subject matter
Once you’ve found a market where there is money to be made, the next thing you need to put together is the information for your product.
Fortunately, this is easier than you might initially imagine because all the information you need is already out there on the net. All you need to do is search for it.
Start by searching Google using your main keyword plus something that helps to locate the kind of information people want.
For example, if people are interested in buying slimming tea, they will certainly want to know about the benefits of doing so:
Before searching Google, click the ‘Advanced Search’ link to the right-hand side of the main search box:
Change the default 10 results per page to 100 to make it easier to find the information you want.
Next, I would research major article directory sites like EzineArticles and GoArticles to find appropriate articles because whilst the words used in then cannot be copied, the underlying concepts and ideas certainly can:
I would also search using variations of your main keyword.
For example, slimming tea is more commonly known as oolong tea, so this is another term that I would use to find appropriate information.
It would also make sense to find appropriate forum sites because this is where you will discover the kind of information people are looking for.
To find the forums that are most appropriate to your market niche, run a Google search for ‘your topic + forums’. These for example are the leading forums in the weight loss market that would be most relevant to a slimming tea product:
Try YouTube and Google video to see whether there are any informative video materials available as well.
With a couple of days research, you can easily accumulate enough information for your product.
Once you have done so, you are ready to move on.
Creating your product
Once you have all of the appropriate information pulled together, the next job is to get down to product creation.
If you are putting together an e-book, product creation is simple and straightforward. Collect your information together, arrange it in the most logical order and then start writing.
Create a Word document (or the Open Office equivalent) to begin with.
Once it is written, put it to one side for 24 to 48 hours because you will inevitably find that editing the document is easier and more effective if you take a rest before starting the editing process.
You should also add an attractive looking e-cover to the book as this makes it look more professional which usually increases sales.
Make sure that your site URL is included in the footer of each page and your book is ready to launch.
All you now need do is convert it into a secure PDF using a free online service like PrimoPDF and you’re good to go.
One thing that you should consider before launching a product is whether there is any room to add additional value to the offer that you make.
For example, in many markets, adding an instructional video or a video series might be appropriate. If so, this clearly adds additional value to your offer. This in turn means that you sell more and that you have more satisfied customers as well.
Keeping customers satisfied is always a good idea as it makes it likely that they will come back and buy from you again in the future.
So, wherever possible, try to add additional value to the package on offer.
All of this of course assumes that you are going to create the product yourself.
If however you do not think your writing skills are up or you do not have the time available to write the book yourself, you can outsource the work through any of the leading online freelance sites like Elance or Odesk.
There are hundreds of professional writers registered with both of these sites so if writing a book is a problem, it is very easy to find someone else to do it for you.
Creating a sales site
In order to sell your product, you need to create a sales site that you will publish through ClickBank.
For this site, the very least you will need is a sales and a download page.
Ideally however, you should also include an upsell offer in your sales system to maximize your income. This is a complementary product or an upgrade to your main product that is offered to your new customer immediately after they have decided to buy your main product.
When you sell any information product using ClickBank or a comparable site, you are going to give away a significant amount of the initial product sales revenue as an affiliate commission.
Consequently, by including an upsell in your system, you enhance the overall profitability of this sale.
With an upsell in your system, you also have the option of offering your affiliate a bigger payout as well. This would obviously encourage affiliates to sell your product which is why this is a very sensible option.
When you create your sales page, you need to write copy, the words on the page that are designed to sell your product.
Some people find writing copy is easy whereas for others, it appears to be considerably more difficult. It does not however need to be…
Assuming that you leave the ClickBank settings as per the default, the products at the top of any search results page are the bestsellers when you click on any individual category.
I have already suggested that a bestseller is not however necessarily synonymous with the best product or even the most popular.
Instead, a bestseller is at the top of the tree because the sales page for that product is doing an extremely good job.
Hence, all you need do is study three or four top performing sales letters before duplicating the style of them in your own sales copy.
For example, all of the most successful sales letters have the main benefits highlighted as bullet points:
The reason for highlighting benefits as bullets is simple.
It is benefits that persuade prospects to become customers and highlighting them as bullet points makes sure that the benefits are not inadvertently missed.
If however you do not feel confident about writing your own copy, you can find plenty of sales copywriters using the freelance sites highlighted in the previous chapter.
With either Elance or Odesk, finding someone who can write you copy and create your sales site for you is quick and easy, although of course you will have to pay people to do the work.
Publishing your sales page
Once your product is ready to go, the final step is to publish your sales site through the ClickBank system.
To do so, you use exactly the same membership through which you become an affiliate of the site, except that to publish your first product with ClickBank, you need to pay a one-off activation fee of $49.95.
When adding your sales site to ClickBank, it needs to be integrated with their system so that (as an example) there is a ClickBank payment link on your sales page.
However, there are detailed instructions about integrating your site with ClickBank within the member area.
Consequently, if you already have an affiliate account with ClickBank, you can login to the site, click the ‘Help Center’ link at the top right-hand corner of the page and then look for the appropriate vendor guidance:
Conclusion
You now have all of the basic information you need to launch your own digital information bestseller through ClickBank.
As suggested in the introduction, there is nothing especially complex or difficult about launching a new product through ClickBank. Indeed, if you work through each step of the process as set out in this report, you will find that it is a lot easier than you might ever have imagined.
